Wouldn't it be better to focus on the celebration; instead of the gifts?
Instead of asking, "What did you GET?", simply ask, "Did you have a good (or nice, fun, etc.) Christmas (or birthday, party, etc.)?"
Like this, "Did you have a fun birthday?"
Chances are, if they really want you to know what they received, you won't have to ask.
Yes, I know, we ALL do it. We have since we were young children.
But, it's never too late to change!
